The Game Awards aren’t just about looking back at the greatest video games released in the past year – they’re also dedicated to celebrating what’s in store for the next year of video game releases. 2024 (the show’s tenth anniversary) was no exception, with much of the show devoted to trailers, developer appearances, celebrity endorsements, and world premieres – not to mention performances by Snoop Dogg.
New game promos caused controversy at last year’s Game Awards, with many viewers criticizing the amount of advertising aired during the show. Some of 2023’s winners were hurriedly played off stage in the middle of their acceptance speeches, while photos of a teleprompter at the event urging presenters to „Please wrap it up” went viral on social media. While there was a lot less rushing this time around, that doesn’t mean there were any fewer announcements. As always, a significant portion of The Game Awards 2024’s runtime was devoted to announcing games, DLC, and other new releases coming soon.
15 The Outer Worlds 2 Is The Next Effort By A Legendary RPG Studio
Obsidian Entertainment, 2025
The Outer Worlds was an open-world sci-fi RPG released by legendary developer Obsidian Entertainment, best known for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout New Vegas. It received positive reviews for its writing and creative vision, but with criticism focused on the lack of variety and polish in its gameplay. But Obsidian is back, and better than ever, with The Outer Worlds 2, a sequel to the original game that it promises is „twice as big.” Like its predecessor, it’s expected to be a first-person shooter RPG with a witty sense of humor when it comes out in 2025.

Bandai Namco, December 16, 2024
Amid rumors of upcoming Final Fantasy rep in Tekken 8, Clive Rosfield blasted onto TGA screens in a fiery new trailer for his debut in the legendary fighting game. They’ll be able to choose from one of three classes (Knight, Sellsword, or Assassin) as they participate in pivotal battles to determine the fate of Westeros. It’s expected out next year, with further details to come.

9 Helldivers 2 Is Getting A Major Update, Omen Of Tyranny
Arrowhead Game Studios, Available Now
Surprise hit co-op shooter Helldivers 2 is getting a major content update – and it’s already out now. Released this February to practically overnight success, Helldivers 2 was lauded for its delightfully chaotic gameplay and punishing difficulty. Updates slowed a few months after release, leading some players to declare the game dead. But it’s anything but with the reveal of its next update, Omen of Tyranny. The update introduces new enemy types, new vehicles, and new areas to be explored. The best part is, the update is out tonight – there’s no waiting required to experience this new Helldivers content.
8 Palworld Announced Its Next Update, Feybreak
Pocketpair, December 23, 2024
And speaking of major updates, Palworld is getting one this winter, too. Feybreak is due out on December 23 of this year, introducing new weapons, new base elements, and, most importantly, several new Pals to the creature-collecting game. The announcement of Feybreak comes amid renewed controversy for Palworld, which is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with Nintendo over alleged patent infringement based on certain game mechanics. Although recent changes to Palworld, believed by some players to be a direct result of the ongoing lawsuit, haven’t been popular, a new update might be just the thing it needs to up its game.
7 Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Is Reviving Virtua Fighter
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, 2025
Although a pioneer in the fighting game genre, the Virtua Fighter series has been mostly defunct since 2006. For a while, the easiest way to play Virtua Fighter games, unless one was lucky enough to own an old copy or find one in an arcade, was to play them as mini-games in the various Yakuza and Like A Dragon titles in which they appeared. So it’s only fitting that Like A Dragon developer Ryu Ga Gotoku studio would be working on the next original Virtua Fighter game, as yet untitled. It’s due out in 2025; expect more information from Sega in December.
6 RGG Is Also Working On A New Historical Japanese Brawler, Project Century
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, No Release Date
RGG Studio just can’t stop winning this year, as immediately after announcing its Virtua Fighter sequel, it launched into a new trailer for Project Century, a brawler set in 1915 Japan. Its first trailer depicts its as-yet unnamed hero swinging fists, knives, and broken bottles at all manner of street toughs. That’s right, this isn’t Yakuza, Like A Dragon, or Ishin – it’s a totally original property brought to players by the creators of those beloved series. Although Project Century doesn’t have a release date (or, presumably, a final title yet), it’s got quite a pedigree behind it, and looks pretty promising.
5 Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Brings Back The Classic Hack-And-Slash Series
Capcom, 2026
Beginning way back in 2001, Onimusha is a long-running series of hack-and-slash action games set amid a dark fantasy version of Meiji-era Japan. The games traditionally feature brutal, bloody combat against a diverse variety of horrifically mutated enemies, interspersed with Resident Evil-style puzzles. It undeniably inspired similar Japan-set dark fantasy games like Sekiro and the Nioh series, which appear to have had an impact on Onimusha‘s revival. Subtitled Way of the Sword, the next Onimusha game is currently in development by Capcom, and expected to be released sometime in 2026. It appears to be an undeniably faithful revival of the long-running cult classic series.
4 Borderlands 4 Got Its First Real Trailer
Gearbox, 2025
First announced at Summer Game Fest this past June, Borderlands 4 is the next mainline title in the long-running co-op looter-shooter series. Borderlands has always been known for its class-based gameplay, randomly-generated loot, and irreverent sense of humor. It was most recently adapted into a film starring Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kevin Hart; Borderlands 4 will be its first mainline game release since 2019. The next entry looks to be moving slightly further away from the comic book-style, cel-shaded graphics it was originally known for, with a greater focus on realism. Its TGA trailer provided a first look at in-game visuals ahead of its release in 2025.
3 Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Is A New Adventure Game From Naughty Dog
Naughty Dog, No Release Date
Coming next year from Naughty Dog, the studio behind The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Crash Bandicoot , Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet appears to be an action-adventure game set amid a spacefaring future, where spaceships drift lazily among the stars. Its protagonist, Jordan, appears to be searching for someone as they flip through channels on their TV, their walls covered in newspaper clippings, before jetting off to some distant planet in search of a new lead.

The trailer ends with Jordan drawing a glowing sword, ready to do battle against an imposing robot. That’s all there is to say about Intergalactic so far, except for the PlayStation logo at the end of the trailer that seems to imply it’s a PS exclusive.
2 The Witcher 4, The Next Game In The Witcher Series
CD Projekt Red, No Release Date
One of the first major reveals at The Game Awards this year was The Witcher 4, the next game in The Witcher series. Developed by CD Projekt Red, more recently known for its work on Cyberpunk 2077, this game appears to be set in the same world as Geralt of Rivia’s celebrated and acclaimed adventures, but revolves around his adopted daughter Ciri instead. No gameplay was shown at TGA, in the extended cinematic trailer, but The Witcher 4 is expected to be a story-heavy, choice-focused RPG like the rest of the series. Its release date is to be determined, but is likely still far off.
1 Elden Ring: Nightreign Is Dark Souls Meets Monster Hunter
FromSoftware, 2025
Winner of The Game Awards’ Game of the Year in 2022 and the only game ever to be nominated for GOTY twice (thanks to the game-sized Shadow of the Erdtree DLC), Elden Ring is getting a standalone sequel next year that aims to revolutionize the series’ characteristically crushing combat in an entirely new way. Elden Ring: Nightreign is basically what a Soulsborne game would look like with Monster Hunter-style co-op multiplayer mixed in. The Monster Hunter series has always been a point of inspiration for Elden Ring developer FromSoftware, so in some ways, this feels like a full-circle moment. Elden Ring: Nightrein is scheduled for release in 2025.
